Life Outside of Violence: Helping Those Harmed By Violence Find Alternatives to End the Cycle

Kateri Chapman-Kramer, Project Coordinator and Melik Coffey, Program Mentor describe Life Outside of Violence (LOV), which is the short name for the St. Louis Area Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program. The program helps those harmed by stabbing, gunshot or assault receive the treatment, support and resources they need to find alternatives to end the cycle of violence. The idea behind LOV is to help decrease incidences of retaliation, criminal involvement, re-injury, and death.

Begun in early 2018, LOV is the first in the nation to incorporate three research universities (Washington University, Saint Louis University and University of Missouri-St. Louis) and four hospitals (Barnes-Jewish Hospital, SSM Health St. Louis University Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.)
